Heiko Kalmbach, Filmmaker & Videoartist

Heiko Kalmbach works as a filmmaker, theater director, video artist and projection designer. He was born in the Black Forest, Germany in 1969. After pursuing drama and cultural studies in Bremen and Berlin he completed a filmmaking degree at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Heiko has been making films and videos since 1994. His award winning shorts have screened at venues like the Goethe Institutes in Paris and New York, Anthology Film Archives New York, and at Festivals like Oberhausen, São Paulo and South By Southwest. In 2000 he co-founded the Berlin based production company Spoonfilm. His feature documentary IF ONE THING MATTERS - A FILM ABOUT WOLFGANG TILLMANS premiered in the Forum section at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008 and has been presented at Festivals like Copenhagen, Leipzig, Torino, Lisboa, Oslo, New York and Toronto.
In the early 90s Heiko Kalmbach had worked with German Off-Theater Companies. In 2003 he reengaged with live performance as a director and projection designer. VERMISST by Alexander Pfeuffer, which he directed at Theaterhaus Jena in 2006, was invited to DRAMAFEST Mexico City and Puebla. His production of KNOCK OUT by Katharina Schmitt was shown at Autorentheatertage 2008 at Thalia Theater Hamburg. His performance / video installation piece BLEAK HOUSE, a collaboration with stage designer Marsha Ginsberg, was presented at the CRASH! BOOM! BAU! Festival of contemporary Scenography in 2009. In 2010 he presented the show SEESTÜCKE at Volksbühne Berlin, a piece based on texts by Friedrich Schiller which included a 35mm film projection and numerous video elements. In 2011 he created video pieces for the WALDEN performance night at the Ueber Lebenskunst Festival at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. The same year he designed projection elements for the performance piece KLEOPATRA - THE DEAD DON'T BITE, which premiered in Kolkata, India. Heiko Kalmbach has been teaching in the area of film, video and performance in the USA and Europe since 1999 and is a tutor at the AAIS London. He is a co-founder of the Berlin and New York based performance group NATURALEZA HUMANA.
