Stage

Of prime importance is the development of stage-settings and costumes for theatre, musical theatre and related interdisciplinary forms on the basis of classic and contemporary plays. The main focus of the course will be to learn how to think in dramaturgical and theatrical ways, and how to translate the resulting thoughts in a sensual way into one’s own visual language. Specific exercises (exercises with models, scenarios and figurines), which take into account artistic aspects as well as craftsmanship, will help the student pursue these goals.

The ability to create one’s own designs will be practised through exercises and short-term projects in the first two terms of the course (the translation of poems, short stories, literary or musical sources to theatrical forms).
The scope of these designs will become increasingly complex in later semesters, during which students will gradually be involved in the planning of more large-scale plays and projects in the fields of theatre, opera, musical and dance. Projects will be treated in greater depth in relation to the following aspects: the design of lighting concepts, stage and event technology, budgeting and light/ sound and stage technology in general.

The fourth term will be devoted to the development of the course’s most extensive piece of work: the master’s project. The project’s goal is the design of the stage set and the costumes for a classic or contemporary play for (musical) theatre, or, alternatively, the composition and arrangement of a performance space according to specific thematic specifications. Prior to the student’s own work on the project, the respective topics will be developed in the master’s colloquium under the guidance of the teaching staff.
