In cooperation with the Chemnitz Theatre, second-semester students once again worked under the direction of Norman Heinrich during the 2025 summer semester to develop various stage and costume designs for the satirical animal fable ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. The stage design and costume design by Paulina Jarosinska and the costume and make-up design by Inés Peláez were selected for realisation. The project is now being realised at the Chemnitz Theatre with acting students from the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin under the direction of Ulrike Euen.
The animals on Manor Farm have had enough: Farmer Jones neglects them and drinks away all his money. Before they all go under, the animals decide to try a revolution. Inspired by the words of the old boar Old Major and led by the pigs Napoleon and Snowball, they drive Jones away and take over the farm. At first, they are very successful. The farm prospers and, according to the principles of Animalism, all animals are equal. But it doesn’t stay that way. The pig Napoleon takes more and more for himself – leaving less for the others. Because some animals are apparently more equal than others.
With Animal Farm, Orwell wrote a fable that initially explicitly depicts the history of the Soviet Union. Consequently, the book was banned throughout the former Eastern Bloc. But the story is much more universal, because it shows that even the best ideals can lead to disaster if animals become too similar to humans.
