MEDIAL PRODUCTION

In this four-day workshop in the summer semester of 2024, the students of the 2nd semester, led by Heiko Kalmbach and Isabel Robson, developed formal and technical principles for the use of moving images in space.

What was this course about? In order to sharpen our eyes, we deal theoretically and practically with classic film questions about image setting, camera view and editing: Close up or wide shot? Moving or static image section? Subjective or objective camera? Hard cut or fade? In several camera exercises, we test various formal means and discuss the effect of film clips of various formats and genres. Based on this, we analyze the potential of video, film or other image projections in a scenographic context. Together, we develop a vocabulary for creating moving image content for use in space. Our most important question in this first part of the Media Staging Workshops is: How do pre-produced films and videos represent a real extension of the scenic space and the action and not just a diversion from it?

The gallery shows the prototypical work results of the students in our studios on various short texts by Franz Kafka, which were created within a day.
