In collaboration with the Chemnitz Theatre, second-semester students once again worked under the guidance of Norman Heinrich during the summer term of 2026 to produce various set and costume designs for the space-themed satire “From the Earth to the Moon” – based on the novels by Jules Verne.
Fan Ye’s stage design and Mila Thoma’s costume design were selected for production. The project is now being staged at the Chemnitz Theatre with drama students from the universities of Rostock, Regensburg and Babelsberg, directed by Tilo Krügel.
Jules Verne’s novels about the Moon – written 100 years before Apollo 11 and 200 years before today’s fantasies about Mars – are a chillingly accurate satire on the obsession with weapons and colonial arrogance; they may be set in the USA, but they are aimed at the whole of humanity: the American Civil War is over and has left a terrible void. What is the Gun Club to turn its attention to now? In peacetime, it lacks a raison d’être. Couldn’t a new war be on the cards? Then the chairman, Barbicane, has an idea: who, if not the experts at the Gun Club, could fire a cannonball at the Moon! Why? Because they can! And this ‘message’ might just instil a bit of respect in the inhabitants of the Moon. When the Frenchman Ardan announces his intention to join the flight, Barbicane and his rival Nicholl are also determined not to miss out on this adventure, and so the three men (and a dog) set off for the Moon.
