Bettina Auer

Bettina Auer, born in Heidelberg, lives in Berlin. She studied musical theater directing as well as musicology and German studies in Hamburg and Berlin. In addition to permanent engagements as music dramaturge or chief dramaturge at the theaters in Bern, Darmstadt, Basel and at the Komische Oper Berlin, she supervised productions and projects in drama and dance, helping to conceptualize numerous world premieres. During this time she also made guest appearances at the Zurich Opera House, Burgtheater Vienna, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Israel Festival in Jerusalem and Schauspiel Köln.

Bettina Auer has been working closely with Calixto Bieito since 2009. She has also been a partner to numerous directors, including Stefan Bachmann, Karin Beier, Tatjana Gürbaca, Claus Guth, Jasmina Hadziahmetovič, Barbora Horáková Joly, Barrie Kosky, Hans Neuenfels, Stefan Pucher, Nicolas Stemann and Michael Thalheimer.

Since 2012, she has worked as a freelance production dramaturg at, among others. at the Amsterdam Opera, Teatro Argentino, Antwerp Opera, Salzburg Festival, Berlin Philharmonic, Oslo National Theater, Theater an der Wien, Oslo Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Residenztheater Munich, Grand Théâtre Genève, Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Hamburg State Opera and Opéra national de Paris.

Bettina Auer has been a guest lecturer at various universities in Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. For many years she has taught at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin (in the directing and dramaturgy classes), of which she was recently appointed honorary professor.
