Video Artist, Stage Director
Heiko Kalmbach has been working as a filmmaker, video artist and stage director since 1995. He spent two years pursuing drama and cultural studies at Universities in Bremen and Berlin before completing a film degree at Tisch School of the Arts in New York City, where he was based for ten years. His films have screened at Festivals like the Berlin International Film Festival, São Paulo Film Festival und CPH:DOX Copenhagen. Video installations at Human Resources Gallery Los Angeles, Schwules Museum* Berlin and Sweet Thunder Festival San Francisco among others. His work for the stage as a director and video designer has for example been presented at Drama Fest Mexico, Autorentheatertage Hamburg, Fusion Festival and Volksbühne Berlin. He is co-founder of the Berlin based production company Spoonfilm and the New York / Berlin performance group Naturaleza Humana. He has been teaching in his fields of practice since the late 90s and has been a tutor at the Architectural Association’s Interprofessional Studio (MA/MfA in Spatial Performance and Design) in London since 2008. Heiko works as a trainer for Expressive Arts in Transition (an art based intervention for people who suffer from stress and trauma) and leads the Creative Hub at ICPA Berlin’s Strategic Communications Incubator. He supports diverse projects as mentor, consultant and creative director. Over 25 years of yoga and meditation practice inform his work as artist and teacher.
