Michael Höppner

Music Theatre Director, Dramatic Advisor

Michael Höppner was born in Berlin. He studied theatre sciences, literary studies and musicology at the Freie Universität Berlin. During his studies and after a musical apprenticeship/training he gained his first theatrical experience as a dramaturgyassistant. Here he worked with productions of Frank Castorf, Christoph Marthaler and Martin Wuttke at the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz (2003-2005). He worked as firm directorial assistant on Burgtheater in Vienna i.a with Christoph Schlingensief, Andrea Breth, Sebastian Hartmann, Jan Bosse, Stephan Kimmig, Roland Schimmelpfennig, Alvis Hermanis und Luc Bondy (2007-2010). From 2011 to 2014 was Michael Höppner masterstudent for direction of music theatre at the HfM “Hanns Eisler” (lessons for direction with Prof. Claus Unzen, Prof. Corinna von Rad and Prof. Karoline Gruber, workshops for direction with Barrie Kosky und Jürgen Flimm). Since 2014 is Michael Höppner director and director-in-chief of the contemporary ensemble of the music theatre Opera Lab Berlin. Since 2006 is he doing own direction works (play and music theatre) i.a. in Vienna, Berlin, Halberstadt, Dresden, Leipzig, Trier and Bayreuth.
