Sophie Leypold, born in Strasbourg, studied fine arts there and costume design in Hanover. She worked as a permanent costume assistant at the Deutsches Theater Berlin for three years. During this time and afterwards, she collaborated with the Junges DT and various directors, including Thom Luz, Frank Abt, and Karin Henkel. Since 2017, she has been freelancing and works mainly for theaters as a costume and set designer, including with directors Jürgen Kruse, Matthias Hartmann, and Daniel Kunze at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Teatro del Maggio opera house in Florence, the Schauspiel Bern theater, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, and in the independent scene. She has also designed costumes for several films (including Nackte Tiere, Berlinale 2020, and Tamara, Grimme Prize 2024). Telling stories, inspiring dreams and thought, are important driving forces in her work. The relationship to space, as a projection surface and as a meeting place, has taken on an increasingly important role in recent years, which she hopes to explore even further.
