Verena Hemmerlein

Stage and Costume Designer

Verena Hemmerlein, born in Munich in 1979, studied stage and costume design in Prof Karl Kneidl’s class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and graduated as a master student.
She assisted stage designers at the Stuttgart State Opera, the RuhrTriennale, the Musiktheater im Revier and the Opera National du Rhin Strasbourg and worked as production manager for Opera Ireland.
She has been designing sets and costumes for musical theatre, drama and dance since 2003 and was awarded the Cultural Promotion Prize of the City of Würzburg in 2007.
She has created sets for the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the Staatstheater Nürnberg and Augsburg, the Thüringer Staatsballett and Leipziger Ballett, Mainfrankentheater Würzburg, Musiktheater im Revier, Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, theatres in Kiel, Erfurt and Trier, the ATZE Musiktheater Berlin and the Theaterakademie August Everding Munich, among others.
International commissions have taken her to the Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma, the Teatro Real Madrid, Sadlers Wells London, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Stadttheater Bern, Opera-Théatre de L’Eurométropole de Metz, Tulsa Ballet Theatre USA, Gwangju City Ballet, Seoul Ballet Festival and the Baden stage near Vienna. She has worked with directors Katharina Thoma, Rosamund Gilmore, Andreas Baesler and Hanfried Schüttler and choreographers Goyo Montero, Silvana Schröder, James Sutherland, Mario Schröder, Terence Kohler, Douglas Lee, Young Soon Hue, Kristina Paulin, Alexander Abdukarimov, Arshak Ghalumyan, Mauro Astolfi, Etienne Béchard, Anna Vita and Dominique Dumais, among others.
She has worked with the choreographer Goyo Montero for many years, as well as with Silvana Schröder at the Thüringer Staatsballett and with the choreographer James Sutherland.
